Powder coated brass, polyurethane foam, embroidery thread
A narrative departure from usual work, and a response to the piece that came before it ("Out of Touch"), this brooch came to be after quite a bit of thought about the hidden labor in jewelry making, and how it can be connected to emotional labor in a single piece. This brooch has a message sewn into it, but it is difficult to read unless you “dig” in the foam to find the letters. The back has an (almost) perfect, meticulously drilled grid of holes that are interrupted by the chaotic back of the embroidery, something only the wearer knows about unless they choose to share it. The thread simultaneously holds the brooch together and messes it up.
